Update Nando’s Wheels
So many of you have kindly asked about Nando and the status of his wheels, thank you so much for your concern. We got Nando’s wheelchair but he cannot use it, it doesn’t work for him right now. He has been walking with his head tilted to the left and hanging down and when we attached the cart he went over in a somersault. He can barely walk right now, I took him to the Vet the other day who diagnosed IVD, Idiopathic Vestibular Disease or as she put it Old Dog Vestibular Disease. It turns out that he has a severe inner ear infection in both ears which could be the reason he falls and tilts to the left. He is on antibiotics both oral and in his ears. I contacted Harlan at Red Flyer and told him I would return the wheelchair but he said to hang on to it in the hopes that the antibiotics would help Nando so that he can use it.
He was having a hard time before but now this has made things a hundred times worse and more difficult. Watching him try to move is heartbreaking and I honestly didn’t know what was wrong. I thought maybe a stroke, He is struggling but keeps trying to walk, he is so determined. I have to hold him up to eat, he still has a great appetite despite all of this, Nando is my foodie pug. Keep him in your thoughts.
Suzanne and Nando
Oh, Suzanne! I’m so very sorry for you and Nando. Thank you for the update. You are both in my thoughts!!! Much love and good luck!!
I am so upset, he is actually worse tonight. I really hope the antibiotics work and he can at least straighten up and hold his head up. Thank you so much Em.
Sending you prayers for Nando that he overcomes these extra struggles. You care so much for him and it shows. We’re thinking of you and praying that Nando gets through this. ♡

Thank you so much Cheryl I can say the same about you.
Nando you are a very dear boy with a very brave heart, gentle hugs amd kisses for you.
Thank you Heather, he is brave and strong and determined.
Poor Nando, that just breaks my heart. We worry so much for our dog babies and it is so hurtful when we can’t do anything for them.
It’s such a helpless feeling, thanks Julie.
Sorry to hear that, Suzanne. May be it will work better once the ear infection is cleared…
I am hoping that is the case, thank Anatoli.
Oh Suzanne, I’m so sorry to read this. I hope the antibiotics do great things and that he is doing better really soon xxx thinking of you both x
I hope so too, they say it takes about 72 hours before they really start working. Hoping today is a better day. Thanks Elaine.
I hope so xx

I am hopeful Heather. Thanks so much.
You are both in my thoughts, wish you the best.
Viviana, thank you so much.
Oh Bless him. I hope he gets better soon. Poor thing. Emma xx
Thanks Emma, one thing about Nando is that he is fighter (in a good and kind way) he has battled diabetes for 7 years, has been blind almost that long. He will pull through this.
Bless him. I wish Nando all the best. I also wanted to say I am opening up surreyKitchen to guest bloggers. If you would like to write a guest post one day then please get in contact. I am happy for you to blog about anything you feel our readers would find interesting. Take care. Emma xx
Would love to do a guest post. Thanks so much Emma!
Suzanne, my heart is breaking for you and Nando. He is having such a tough time. I hope the problem with his inner ear can be fixed so he can enjoy his new wheels.
Thank you so much Sharon, it’s thanks to you that Nando has the wheels. I am very hopeful the inner ear infection will clear up and he can use the wheelchair.
Aw, poor Nando, it’s such a shame that he cannot use his wheels. I hope the antibiotics give him some relief. It must be heart breaking to watch him. 😉 Bx
Thank you I see a little improvement today at least I think so am hopeful!
It is so hard to see them suffer. This must be brutal for you! I hope he recovers and is his ‘ol self again soon!
Thank you very much, I hope so too.
Suzzane,
My heart goes out to you and Nando. It must be so hard for you to see him suffer. I hope he feels better soon. You both are in my thoughts.
Thank you so much Sandhya!
Had to take our chihuahua to the vet ‘coz we noticed that his right ear was tilted. Both his ears are now upright thanks to his prescribed meds. Hope Nando’s antibiotics work for him too!
I am so glad your doggie responded to the meds. How old? I hope Nando responds, so far he hasn’t really, because it’s an inner ear infection maybe it takes time. Here’s hoping. Thank you so much.
Max turns 10 today! 🙂 We administered an ear cleanser (Epi-Otic) plus meds for two weeks. He’s okay now.
Rooting for Nando!!
Suzanne– add my love and prayers with all the other people concerned for Nando. Hoping these antibiotics make a difference. Hugs from here…
Thank you so much Rhonda.
Oh Suzanne, my heart is breaking for Nando, I am just so sorry, I hope the antibiotics take effect and work, my thoughts and prayers are with you both always!! xoxo
Thank you so much Amy, I hope you are ok, read about the flooding in KY.
Hi Suzanne, we are fine, the flooding is down further in Ky, I live right across the river from Cincinnati, so if you hear about the Ohio flooding it may not effect me since I live high up, and around 7 miles from the river, that would be my area per-say 🙂 Cheers friend!!
So good to hear the flooding did not impact you. Good to you live high up. Where I live is higher also so we never experience the flooding other parts of Brooklyn have. Have a great day Amy.
Oh Suzanne., am so sorry for you and Nando. … you both are in My prayers… wish you both a good luck. ..
Thank you so much Chitra, My heart is broken every day.
You and Nando are always in my thoughts, Suzanne. I’m glad that the ear infection is something curable, and that it will help with his locomotion. Kiss his sweet head for me, please. Love to you both.
I got some potentially very sad news today. Took Nando to the bet because I saw no change after 5 days of the antibiotics . The doc thinks it’s a brain tumor. She put him on steroids because he does have inflammation in the ear I hope she is wrong and the steroids help but if not I am going to have to help his pass peacefully. Thanks Cynthia.
My heart aches for you. And for Nando. I am shedding tears as we speak. I pray that you can feel me holding you. Izzy and Nando have become such a part of our pet family, and I ache for your losses and pain. Please, kiss the top of his sweet head for us.
I feel your deep pain. Having pets means having to make the difficult decisions. May peace be with you both.
I am holding Nando as I type this and gave him a kiss from you. Thank you.
I’m holding you both in my heart, Suzanne.
Hello Suzanne! I’m in France right now heading back to Italy next week so I’m kind of neglecting my blogger friends but I wanted to let you know that you and Nando are in my thoughts. I’m so sorry to hear that the wheelchair didn’t work and that Nando got that darn infection. I can only imagine the sorrow and the worries! I’ll pray for both of you and I send you both a virtual big hug. Please keep me posted if you feel like it.
Love,
F.
Thank you Francesca, have a wonderful time in Europe. Envious!
Dear sweet Nando… I really hope that once the ear infection is gone that he will be able to make use of the wheelchair. He sounds like such a little battler… it’s reassuring to know that he hasn’t lost his appetite though. Sending you both special thoughts, M.xx
Thanks Margot, so sorry for the delayed response. Poor Nando is still battling the inner ear infection/Vestibular Disease. He was prescribed the wrong antibiotic and had to start over which is not good at all. He is a real little fighter and continues to eat even though it’s very hard for him. He loves his food.
Sending Nando buckets of love and healing thoughts and prayers. So sorry Suzanne – this is hard on all of you. Good for you for all that you are doing for the sweet old boy. My dog Lola sends LOVE. xo
Thank you Lindy, I have never had to deal with an inner ear infection with a dog before and it’s absolutely catastrophic for Nando. He cannot walk at all, it’s so sad because he tries but falls over. Give Lola a big kiss from me and Nando.
Just the fact that Nando is determined to walk makes me feel good. I know his diagnoses isn’t great, and I know he is in pain, but the strength Nando has is incredible and should be an example for everyone that hears this story. You may be down, but that doesn’t mean you give up. I will definitely be praying for his body to be healed. Thanks for this update Suzanne.

Thanks Kay, he is fighting to survive, seeing him try is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Thank you for the encouragement and kind words.
well if he is still eating that is a great sign isn’t it – poor animal with the vestibular issue, but that could resolve itself at which point he would hopefully be able to use the wheels, provided its a bacterial infection and not a virus? Keeping fingers crossed for you boht
Yes his appetite is not suffering for sure, he is a real food lover and will eat at any time of day or night, I hope it’s not a virus, geez, we have been treating this now for 3 weeks his poor little body is pumped full of antibiotics.
Hiya – 3 weeks with no improvement sounds very odd for a bacterial infection…at least in a human it would be of concern, although you said the first Ab was not the right one. Does he still walk at all? Does he bump into stuff – predominantly one direction or not? Do you trust your vet beyond question? Does this type of thing happen a lot in pugs – or is it something rare where a second opinion might be worth it? There are so many different possible etiologies…..(I guess I am not being helpful here, so I’ll send you positive thoughts as well)
It is a long time, they did not culture his ears initially, bad move and I thought they did, I had to take him back in the following week for a culture since there was no improvement, the culture took a week to come back and when it did they said what he has been on was not what he should take to kill the bacteria, it did nothing and he took for 2 weeks. He then started clavamox with ear drops also, 5 days in improvement is there but hardly noticeable. He has taken a few steps today which is huge, prior to today he could not walk at all, he falls over when he stands plus his head hangs down almost touching the ground and is tilted to the left. I have to hold him up with great difficulty to go to the bathroom, it’s really hard. He lost 2 weeks basically of treatment with an AB thatdid not work on his ear infection I am sure got worse. Inner ear infections are horrible and the poor little guy is having a really hard time. They also said it could be a brain tumor. My Vet is upstate 90 miles away and I cannot go to him anymore Nando cannot tolerate the trip so I am seeing a local vet that was recommended by a friend. The upstate Vet was great, integrative medicine so he was treated with both western and eastern medicine, holistic, homeopathic as well as traditional it was great but since the vet moved even further than was I cannot make the trip with Nando.
I’m so sorry to hear this, Suzanne! My heart goes out to you. Praying for you both!
Thank you so much Shari.
Bailey sends Nando big doggie hugs. Hang in there, Suzanne. We are keeping you both in our thoughts!
Thanks Patty appreciate it!
