Bread, Butter, Radishes For Fiesta Friday #58

bread, butter and radishes

bread, butter and radishes

This is so simple, no recipe required all you need is good bread, butter, radishes, sea salt and honey. I wanted to bring something to the party that just screamed Spring, I am still digging out from yesterdays snow storm and am a bit tired of the heavy food that is prevalent in winter. I got some beautiful watermelon radishes from Farmigo, the CSA I use, I also have some of their hand churned butter and a loaf of my homemade sour dough bread. This is so simple it’s almost stupid but take a slice of bread, slather with a lot of butter, add some sliced radishes, sprinkle with sea salt and drizzle some honey on it, Enjoy!!!

I want to thank Angie@The Novice Gardener for hosting all these fabulous get togethers, they are the best and the highlight of my week. The co hosts this week are , Caroline @Caroline’s Cooking and Elaine @foodbod. Elaine is no stranger to Fiesta Friday and it’s always fun when she is hosting, this is Caroline’s first so a big welcome and thank you to Caroline and Elaine.

  1. These radishes are stunning – so photogenic! I’ve never heard of watermelon radishes – are they as strong-tasting as small ones. I love the idea of combining with honey too – lovely!

    • Watermelon radishes are very mild which is why I love them so much, a little bit of a bite but subtle. They are wonderful with the butter and honey. Thank you so much.

  2. Suzanne this is go interesting, I love watermelon radishes, but unfortunately they are hard to come by down here, I love this 🙂 Happy Fiesta Friday!!!

    • It’s so simple Amy I felt a bit stupid but it’s a delicious treat. I don’t see watermelon radishes that often around here but when it was listed at Farmigo I grabbed 2 of them. They are also wonderful roasted. Thank you so much.

  3. I just made it the other day and we could not have enough. It was refreshing after all these winter foods. Oftentimes, the simplest things are the best! (And, I so crave that fresh farm butter.)

    March 6, 2015
    • Their butter is so good. I hoard it which is a good thing because I haven’t seen it in a while on their list of available products. It really is refreshing eating something like this rather than the heavy stews and soups. Thanks Aleksandra!

  5. Suzanne – those watermelon radishes are gorgeous! I didn’t even know they existed – thank you for this! Just this morning a coworker and I were talking about simple bread and butter sandwiches when we were growing up – and simple sometimes is best – as demonstrated by these!

    March 6, 2015
    • Aren’t those radishes beautiful. the colors made me happy. I love how mild they are and their stunning color. Thanks so much Shashi.

I remember been in one of the restaurants, where one of the appetizers in buffet was served as a bowl of butter, fresh young radishes and sea salt. Perfect. Spring, we are ready for you!

    March 6, 2015
    • It’s a simple and delicious appetizer thanks Anatoli, yes Spring, bring it on we are so ready.

      March 6, 2015
  7. This is beautiful and definitely screams spring! I grew up on radishes with butter, but i’ve never thought to include honey. I’ll try it! What’s that wooden tool?

    March 6, 2015
    • I also ate that growing up, my Mom used to like it. That is a honey spoon, bought it from Michael at Michaels woodcraft. Love it!!! Thanks Mimi.

You have nailed the spring with this post. I have never way end radish with bread and butter let alone an elephant Raddish! Is it peppery or sweet or salty?
    What a fabulous share ❤️

    March 6, 2015
    • Those radishes literally screamed Spring for me. Watermelon radishes are huge, much much bigger than the smaller red variety. They are milder when they are large the one I used the smaller they are the more peppery they are. This one had a bit of a bite but extremely sublte. It had almost a sweet flavor that was so delicious with the butter, was thinking it would make an excellent chutney.

  10. Now that is something I would not have thought of in a million years… Radishes on bread. But it does sound fresh and delicious. Kudos Suzanne! 😀 Hugs to you and Nando.

    March 6, 2015
    • You must try it Teagan, it’s very French and so delicious. Thank you so much.

    March 6, 2015
    • Aren’t they cool, I love them. Thanks Elaine, snow stopped late yesterday evening. Very cold but sunshine today but the light at the end of the tunnel is next week temps close to 50, YAY!!! Thank you.

      March 6, 2015
  12. These beautiful radishes are really getting popular. I love them because they have less of a bite than some of the other ones. I’ve never thought to combine them with honey and I am so envious that you get such a fresh butter!

    March 6, 2015
    • Yes thats why they are my favorite radish, I love that they have just a bit of a bite, just enough for me. Thanks so much.

      March 6, 2015
  13. The radishes look so pretty when sliced, this is the first time I have come across the watermelon variety. I love the idea of an easy to assemble dish made from the finest ingredients. Have a good weekend. 😉

    March 6, 2015
    • They are really good, if you like radish on the mild side this is the one to eat. They are great with butter on bread. Thanks so much.

      March 6, 2015
  14. Those radishes are popular and readily available here in Florida. I love to slice thin, use an English Cucumber (sliced thin) and make a small lunch salad adding in with scallions, sea salt, lemon vinaigrette, dunk crusty bread and I am one Happy Camper! It’s a party in your mouth! A watermelon Radish Crostini! Nice job Suzanne. Glad to hear weather temps. will go up! I can see the snow melting and bicycles jamming the sidewalks now. Have a safe, fun weekend.

    March 6, 2015
    • I really love these radishes, that sounds wonderful!!! Yes fingers crossed for continuation of warmer temps. Thanks Cheryl.

      March 6, 2015
  15. I don’t know that’s called ‘watermelon radish’. It’s just called radish in England. I haven’t tried it before, strange, eh? But now, I will have a try since I saw this post. Thanks for it! 🙂

    March 6, 2015
    • There are several different types of radish that I have seen here in the US, these are the mildest, almost fruity, a little peppery but not overt. Thanks so much Mochi!

      March 6, 2015
  16. This looks so fresh and tasty, perfect way to coax in the spring!

    March 6, 2015

  17. These radishes look beautiful! I have never tried honey with radishes, but I will try it next time I can get some fresh radishes. Looks delicious!

    March 6, 2015
    • It’s wonderful, I had it a long time ago in a French restaurant they put radishes, butter, bread and honey on our table. It was wonderful, thank you so much.

Am not normally a radish fan, but that is gorgeous. Love how these blogs expand our culinary horizons. Honey and sea salt are wonderful additions. Screaming spring sounds good to me. Good luck with the shoveling.

    March 6, 2015
    • I’m not either, watermelon are a whole different taste. Not sharp, only the slightest bite, almost indistinguishable. They are almost like a crisp fruit. Thanks Liz

      March 7, 2015
  19. Beautiful and it sounds delicious, Suzanne 🙂

Gosh, Suzanne – I’ve heard of it all but the honey. And I must say that drizzing some quality honey on that would be sublime !
Your bread ! – words fail. If only I liked sourdough …

    March 7, 2015
    • Thank you, you might eat this bread. It’s not overtly sour if that is what is the offensive flavor. It is oh so subtle. Really delicious bread. Of course this can and should be enjoyed on whatever bread is your choice.

      March 7, 2015
      • M-R #

Understood. But your loaf does look wonderful.

        March 7, 2015
      • Thank you.

        March 7, 2015
  21. Yumm! What else do you need on a slice of tasty bread? I so agree here! Today, we are going to sow radishes in our home-made cold frame! ooh yes! MMMM!

    March 7, 2015
    • Oh you are so lucky, it has been over a month since I’ve seen the ground, it’s snow and ice piled at places about 4 ft high. So envious of your radishes.

      March 7, 2015
  22. I simply must have that honey spoon- where did you get it!!!???

    March 7, 2015

      March 7, 2015
  26. These look like such amazing radishes Suzanne! I’m so happy for you that spring is almost there… might not feel like it just yet, but it’s definitely coming! 🙂

    March 7, 2015
    • It’s funny as we inch into Spring you are doing the same with Fall/Winter. For a brief time we may experience similar temps because it actually can be quite cool here through May.

      March 7, 2015
  27. This is the first year that I have seen watermelon radishes in my life. They are gorgeous. I almost threw them out because I thought they were turnips in my CSA basket. It turn a out that the Queen Anne turnips were pretty pink globes and the radishes were bland white until you cut them. Beautiful.

    March 7, 2015
    • I thought the same thing, I ordered watermelon radishes and thought they sent me turnips. I love how mild they are and how pretty. Thanks Tracey.

      March 9, 2015
  28. Oh wow Suzanne- this is very interesting combo- that looks gorgeous…. perfect spring shout out… 🙂 👍

    March 8, 2015
    • Thanks Chitra, I am beckoning Spring, hoping to jump start and it seems to be working. It’s actually balmy today, the snow is melting and I don’t even need my puffy jacket.

      March 9, 2015
  29. I love lunches that are tasty and simple – just like this. Radishes and butter are so wonderful together!

    March 8, 2015
  30. I love this and love that you’ve kept things simple as to allow the natural flavors to shine! I think the beautiful pink watermelon radish a great way to brighten up any cold day 😉

    March 8, 2015
    • Thanks Justine, simple and natural are always the best IMHO. I really wanted to brighten a very cold snowy day. It worked.

      March 9, 2015
  31. I don’t buy radishes very often and from the look of the ones your offering here I need to take a closer look in the market! Thanks for the introduction to the watermelon radish! This may be a simple recipe, but I certainly learned a lot!! Delicious.

    March 9, 2015
    • I like radishes but sometimes they are have a bit too much of a bite for me, these watermelon radishes are amazing, so mild and delicious I hope you can find them. They are so good. Thanks Nancy.

      March 9, 2015
  32. I’ve never been a big fan of radishes because they’re a little too strong for me, but now knowing the watermelon radish is milder, I may have to give this a try. It looks absolutely stunning!

    March 10, 2015
    • I am not a fan of the really strong spicy radishes either, watermelon radishes are so nice and very mild.I really like them a lot. Thank you Sarah.

      March 10, 2015
