Happy New Year And My Blog Anniversary!!

Taken from Pinterest

Taken from Pinterest

I want to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Happy New Year. It’s 2015 and I can hardly believe it, where did 2014 go? They say time goes faster as you get older and I think that saying is absolutely right on. I know I have said it before but it’s the honest truth, I really appreciate you all. I look to you for inspiration, you challenge me and that makes me a better cook and blogger. This month is the 3rd anniversary of the start of my blog. I had no idea what I was doing, still don’t really. There is no plan or formula. I simply write and cook what I like and hope that you like and appreciate it.

Honestly, this has been a tough year for me. Trying to balance work, I changed companies this year after a very long time with my previous company. Then there are the pugs, well the pug now, this year I lost my sweet Izzy, and that hit me very hard I don’t know if I will ever really get over it, she was very special.

I don’t make resolutions because if I don’t keep them then I fail and I don’t want to fail. I do however give myself suggestions. For example this year I want to try to hone my photography skills. Although I own a camera I still use my iPhone to take all my photo’s for the blog. I want to learn more about photography, food photography to be specific, feature more great recipes from other bloggers, lose weight, volunteer more in my community, exercise more frequently.

I am also very active in the wine community and want to learn more about wine, all aspects and wine tasting.  I have some great teachers, Michelle from Rockin Red Blog, Anatoli from Talk-aVino, Stefano from Clicks and Corks (Flora’s Table) Julian from Vino In Love, Jeff from The Drunken Cyclist  to name a few and I plan to learn from them by carefully following their blogs and asking lots of questions. This year I want to actually visit a winery, maybe in the Finger Lakes or the vineyards in Long Island, keeping it local. I am hoping for more collaboration with my wine expert friends.

In 2014 I also found some fantastic blogs that are not food related or loosely related to food, I discovered some amazing talent in writing and crafts. Teagan Geneviene@Teagan’s Books is a very talented writer and I follow her blog religiously, she weaves incredible fantasy stories based on three ingredients, each week is a different installment and the readers can suggest ingredients or items which are incorporated into the story for that episode, it’s fascinating and exciting. Lord David Prosser@Barsetshire Diaries is incredible, you follow his exploits on his blog, it’s kind of like a Seinfeld episode, you are with Lord Prosser  throughout the day from when he wakes following him all day and into the night and peppered in are lovely photo’s and some great music. It’s so much fun.  Then there are the craftsmen, Michael@Michaels Woodcraft makes the most amazing cutting boards, ice cream scoops and anything that can be carved out of wood. You probably remember the giveaway here for one of his cutting boards and scoops. There are those that are harbingers of all that is beautiful and drool worthy, House of KTS (previously pure and complex) and Lynne Knowlton from Design the Life You Want to Live,  Daniella who could crochet a house for you, Sharon who has a heart as big as Texas with her love for Special Needs Pets. Photographers, Patty Nguyen, The armchair Sommelier (wine and photography), Justine@eclecticoddsnsods, writing, photography, food, humor.

My wish for each of you reading this blog is that all of your dreams and aspirations come true and that you enjoy health, happiness and success in 2015. I want to thank you for putting up with me, following my blog, offering support and kindness and I so appreciate it all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!

Before starting A Pug In The Kitchen I was very active in the food scene, I was a regular on the sites of both Food52 and Whole Foods Market, I regularly entered contests and was lucky enough to win some.  It was competitive cooking that inspired and excited me and gave me the courage to start a food blog. Thank you all that voted for my recipes and gave me encouragement.

Here is a little trip down memory lane. This is my first post ever which I wrote and sat on for a week, petrified to press the publish button, the fear of the unknown I guess. Would anyone read my blog, would they like it, do I really have anything of substance to offer. All those thoughts flooded into my mind but eventually I took the plunge and found a warm and welcoming community.

  1. Happy New Year, AND a great big Happy Blogaversary to you Suzanne 😀

    January 1, 2015
    • Hi Jess, Happy New Year..Thanks so much look forward to more deliciousness from you in 2015.

      January 1, 2015
  2. Feeling hungry and inspired looking at your post. Wow Yum! Our creations don’t look too bad in the end but our cooking adventures are extremely chaotic cooking with two cooks while I was having chemo last year and dog underfoot. Sorry you lost your beloved Pug during the year. My daughter has a real thing for pugs. I’m a fluffy dog person. We have a border collie and gained Lady, the border collie x Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Happy New Year and I’ll be back.
    xx Rowena

    January 1, 2015
    • Hi Rowena, I cooked for my Mom while she was having chemo, it’s tough because the palate changes because of the drugs. I hope you are doing alright now. Thank you, losing Izzy was a real blow and very hard for me, it’s funny I always had large dogs before I got Izzy and now I am totally smitten with pugs. They are so much fun and quirky. I love border collies, so smart and the cavalier King Charles Spaniels are beautiful and regal. Thank you so much and Happy New Year.

      • I remember when we lost our last Border Collie, Zorro, we were heartbroken. We got him shortly after getting engaged and had him for a couple of years before our son was born. In that time, he went everywhere with me. I worked part time and we’d go to the beach etc When the vet told me that he had a tumour I was dumbfounded and I asked him how much time he had left thinking something like 6 months or so and he said days. It didn’t really sink in and we took him home and let him die naturally. Not the best idea but I just couldn’t believe he was that ill. Our current BC is 8 now like Zorro and I thought we’d have an overlap with the next dog but I don’t think it will make it any easier when his time comes. He is his own dog, just like your Izzy..one of a kind.

        January 3, 2015
      • I am so sorry to hear about Zorro, you are so right it’s never easy and their lives seem so short and at times so fragile. Izzy had been ill for a while, she had diabetes like Nando but had other problems that were insurmountable. The diabetes I could have dealt with but her respiratory problems which resulted in heart problems are what ended up taking her life. It leaves a huge hole in your heart and life. Zorro and Izzy were one of a kind and I will always miss her.

    Happy New Year.

I’m with you in wanting to learn more about food photography. I know my lighting is bad, for one thing, and I need better props. We’ll have to post about our phtography finds this year.

We used to adopt greyhounds (5 total), and probably will again someday. We have an English Springer right now and my daughter has Boston Terriers.

    January 1, 2015
    • Lighting is so hard to master. I am fine outside for the most part but in my house forget it, thats why I use my iPhone. I need to take a photography class badly.
There are several greyhounds in my neighborhood all rescues of course, aren’t dogs great!!! Thank you so much and a very Happy New Year.

    January 1, 2015

  15. Great post, one I happily read through to the end – I can’t believe you took all those shots with your phone! I have a simple Canon Rebel – recommend you buy and inexpensive tripod as well. Keep cooking, writing and shooting, my friend xo

    January 1, 2015
    • Thanks Liz and Happy New Year. Yes all with my iPhone, I am going to do a post soon on photography, showing photo’s with my Canon and with the iPhone and see what everyone thinks. Maybe I need a different lens or something. Your photo’s are great, the lighting in my house is bad. I would have to take the food outside to get good shots with my camera and it’s really cold out right now and carrying all the food and props, well thats not happening. I do need a tripod though you are right. Thanks again Liz have a great day and a wonderful new year.

  25. To Mom: From Izzy: Hi Mom a New Year and another year for your anniversary blogging! I am proud you were my Mom all those years…I will never forget you! Nudges to Nando for me. XoXoXo Izzy.

    January 1, 2015
  26. Suzanne, so delighted I found your Blog this year (yes, later in the year 2014), know I will be following you, trying out more of your delicious recipes, and always keeping touch! You are an amazing person; I am happy to call my friend. Best wishes for a wonderful 2015! Cheryl

    January 1, 2015
    • Cheryl, you are a very special person and one that I feel a kinship. Thank you for everything you do, can’t tell you how much it means to me. Tomorrow I am wrestling with my feelings, Nando is going to the Vet upstate, we always travelled together, Izzy and Nando and it’s going to feel very lonely without her on the trip. It will be the first time seeing the Doc since she passed, he was so upset to hear that she passed on.

      January 1, 2015
      • Most Vets get attached to their patients and they truly care! Hoping Nando gets through with flying colors this visit! I admire your determination to insure the best care for the babies! Be safe travelling and I’ll wait to hear about it via web or email! Cheryl

        January 1, 2015
      • I found a very suspicious lump on Nando’s face and need to have the Doc examine him. He see’s the vet every 6 months regularly. He needs dental work for the few teeth he has left and I think it’s possible the lump may be an infection. He was due for dental work the day after Izzy died and I cancelled not being up to the trip. We’ll see what he say’s I will let you know.

        January 1, 2015
      • Hopefully just a cyst and Doc can drain. Maybe an antibiotic for Nando?

        January 1, 2015

  31. That’s such a lovely post. And never apologise for writing more than a paragraph – well, not that I’m telling you what to do! 🙂
I’m with you on needing a new camera. Let’s hope that happens for both us.

    January 1, 2015
    • Thank you, Yes I need to learn how to use a camera, you are a great photographer, I am not. I have no idea how to gauge lighting, have no imagination or sense of how to style a photo. I really do want to learn and yes lets keep thinking positive thoughts, a new camera for us in the near future.

    • Do you use a macro lens? Just wondered, I think in order to get really great food photo’s you need one but I could be wrong. Thank you so much, I do plan on finding someone to teach me photography this year.

      January 3, 2015
      • Yes I do. I had to check as one of my lens says micro but the Nikon guy said it was a macro – he was not sure why Nikon confuses people with the terms. I just need to sit down and study the manual…

        January 3, 2015
      • My problem is lighting and I wonder if a macro will make that better, capture more light. Your photo’s are really good.

  55. Happy for your Blog-anniversary!! So many tempting foods to investigate Suzanne! You are amazing, truly. And not just for your food, you are warm and real. That’s why I love reading your blog. — and I’m on that citrus curd– been wanting to try making lemon curd– and love, love orange marmalade. So I’m imagining this is the best of both. Look forward to all your posts ahead friend…

    • Thanks so much Rhonda. I love citrus, and curd is one of my favorites. This one with mixed citrus is delicious, I love experimenting with flavors and mixing things up. I found another recipe for curd by Tartine Bakery that is so easy and fantastic, it’s made in the blender and you use cold butter. I have the recipe here also and have mixed it up using lemon but also other fruits and berries.

      January 8, 2015
      • Oh, that would be fun to see Suzanne! Is the consistency really different? You don’t cook it? You know so much about food!

        January 8, 2015
      • Rhonda, it’s cooked but not the butter. You cook the eggs, sugar and juice, let it cool just a little pour into a blender and add the cold butter. You don’t have to wait for it to set like regular curd recipes it’s instantly thick. Here is the recipe for the lemon curd it can be adapted using other fruit juices too.

  56. Suzanne… this post is one of the many reasons why I just love you. You are such an inspiration… I think if I would make a New Year’s resolution, it would be to be just like you. I’d like to be able to visit my blog friends and give them the support and love as much as you do. I’m always so impressed with you for that.
And while it was quite a sad year for you… you persevered…you made it through. My wish for you is the happiest 2015… healthiest 2015…and most prosperous (like win the lottery so you don’t have to worry about job changes and stuff…I’m in that same boat) 2015 ever. Much love to you.. ❤
