Online Bake Sale – Helping A Friend And Fellow Blogger In Need

When I first saw the post from Suzie whose wonderful blog Two Dogs In The Kitchen outlined a chain of events that had recently transpired my heart sank for her. Suzie was elated at the birth of her first grandchild but the joy was clouded by sudden and unexpected health problems. Please read the link to her blog, you will see what has happened to her. Suzie’s good friend Veronica knew that she needed help, she didn’t ask for help, but Veronica knew she needed it.

She came up with a brilliant idea to have an online bake sale, the proceeds will help defray the catastrophic cost of her medical care, I donated a cake  (my apple cider applesauce cake)that will be auctioned in November and other food bloggers, bakers and friends have also donated items. If you would like to donate a baked good for the sale please contact Veronica (links are below). Suzie recently lost her job and is uninsured ,we all know how high the cost of medical care is, it can literally bankrupt you. She needs surgery to remove her gall bladder once she recovers from Pneumonia.

If you would like to donate baked goods or buy something from the online auction it would be greatly appreciated  here is the link to her blog, Veronicas Cornucopia you can leave a comment or email her directly, vraklis@yahoo.com  this will help Suzie pay for her mounting medical bills. All you talented and wonderful cooks have to do is let Veronica know what you will donate and after the auction you will be told where and to whom you will send  it to. Very easy and this will help Suzie a lot!!

We food bloggers are a generous and tight knit community, all you have to do is bake and we all love to do that, right? Thanks so much and even if you don’t donate or purchase something from the online bake sale, send your well wishes to her she is amazingly cheerful despite the circumstances. Thanks so much!

    • Thanks Uru, I really hope the bake sale yields some funds that will help her. I know how stressful it must be to know she has to have all that medical stuff done but she cannot afford it. Not a good situation.

  3. I’m totally going to check this out…thanks for sharing! I can’t do a baked good because I’m not local, but I’m sure I could donate.

    • Thank you, It’s going to be a bit tricky I live in NYC and Veronica lives in Kansas and Suzie in Texas. I have packed and shipped cookies and candy before but never a cake. I am going to package the best I can and hope it gets to the recipient in one piece. LOL! Should be ok I think, My heart goes out to Suzie, what a terrible situation.

      • I was thinking you were brave to ship a cake! I’ve never attempted it but my idea would be to put it on a cardboard round (it would have to be the coated kind from the cake store, or foil would have to protect it so the cardboard wouldn’t absorb the cake’s moisture), then stuff the hole with plastic wrap (to make more stable), wrap the entire cake (on the board) very well/tight with plastic wrap, then make sure there is a lot of padding (like packing peanuts) so that the cake does not shift around during shipment (the bottom shouldn’t have any peanuts so the cake will be on a flat, stable surface). Also it will help if you have the post office mark “This side up.” I think you can do it, Suzanne! But if you are too nervous, just let me know and you can switch your donation.

      • Thats exactly what I was thinking, I have 9 inch cardboard rounds, I will stuff the middle with wax paper or parchment and wrap really well in plastic wrap. I think it will be alright, it is not iced so don’t have to worry about that. We’ll see how it goes. I have shipped lots of loaf cakes, cookies etc… I can do this.

      • You go girl! And the only people overseas that will be bidding are on items marked “will ship internationally.” And yeah, that probably would be a bad idea. 🙂

        October 20, 2012
      • Yes I won’t be shipping internationally, afraid what it would look and taste like when it finally got there.

    • It is pretty easy to ship cookies or a loaf like banana bread. Have done it dozens of times. Thanks so much, I think the bake sale will be so much fun.
