Whole Grain Waffles

Handsome waffle maker

Handsome Breville waffle maker photo from Williams Sonoma website

I procrastinate, a lot. I have been wanting to get a new waffle maker for about a year or more but thought I would wait for old one to die, it didn’t but was producing some pretty sorry waffles. I threw caution to the wind and took the plunge. I bought the Breville Smart Waffle maker, and I am really glad I did. It’s wonderful and I have been making waffles for a couple of days now and having a lot of fun experimenting with different recipes. I love how nice and thick the waffles are, uniformly cooked and crisp on the outside, very tender on the inside. This is not a sponsored post by the way, I bought and paid for it this is entirely my opinion and I was not coeerced.

Today I made some whole grain waffles using spelt, oat and almond flour primarily. The waffles are really good, very light and flavorful and I feel pretty good about eating one. A little fresh fruit and drizzle of honey or maple syrup, some butter and you have a nutritious start to the day. I adapted the recipe for Classic Waffles that came in the instruction book.

Whole Grain Waffles

Made 9 waffles

1 cup spelt flour

1/2 cup oat flour

1/2 cup all purpose flour

1/3 cup almond flour

1 tbs baking powder

1 tsp kosher salt

1/4 cup organic sugar (can adjust more or less or use honey or coconut sugar)

1 3/4 cup milk (almond milk would be nice also)

3 large eggs

5 oz butter melted

1 tsp vanilla

Add the flours, baking powder, salt and sugar to medium size mixing bowl. Whisk to combine and make a well in the center. In another bowl beat the eggs with a whisk, add the milk, melted butter and vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the center, whisking while p0uring. Don’t over mix, there may be a few small lumps, thats ok. Let the batter rest while your waffle maker heats. Follow manufacturers cooking instructions. Enjoy!!

  7. Oh my goodness, Suzanne! They look stunning! I don’t think I can show these photos to Her Majesty. She loves waffles and she has been begging me for a waffle maker and I always come up with a new excuse not to buy one. If Her Majesty sees your waffles, I’ll never hear the end of it! 😋

    February 3, 2016
    • LOL, oh no don’t let her see this. But Francesca, you should get one, make them and freeze them, a quick and nutritious breakfast. It’s totally worth it. These whole grain waffes were so good. Thank you so much.

  10. A masterpiece, Suzanne! Your flour blend sounds delicious. And the photo of your plated meal is gorgeous. Tulips… a reminder that spring exists. You’ve helped us all over the mid-week hump — so thank you so much! Mega hugs. 🙂

    February 3, 2016
    • Thank you Teagan, I love the flour blend, I planned on adding barley flour as well but lost it, how one loses barley flour is beyond me but I did. These waffles are wonderful I am so glad they turned out.

      February 3, 2016
      • Oh, and I’m glad you finally treated yourself to the new waffle maker too. Keep having fun with it. More hugs.

        February 3, 2016
  18. You’ve inspired once again! I need to pull out my waffle maker and make batches to freeze. Such an excellent idea, especially when my 15yr old is walking out the door to catch the bus at the very last minute. I can reheat a couple of waffles and hand them off to him… maybe sandwich a piece of ham in-between. 😋

    February 3, 2016
    • I love just reaching into the freezer and throwing one in the oven. It’s ready by the time the coffee is!!

      February 3, 2016
  19. Waffles looks awesome, Suzanne! I love waffles, but don’t have a waffle maker, I have the manual one and I feel so lazy to make any in that :/

    February 3, 2016
    • I used to have one of those. Hold it over the burner, flip it over. I have gotten lazy.

      February 3, 2016
      • Tell me about it! Thinking of investing in one of these waffle makers, let’s see when 🙂

        February 3, 2016
      • Well I thought about it for over a year. It is worth the money I think. It’s so easy to use.

        February 3, 2016
      • Yes I agree these are much more easier 🙂 Loved your recipe too:) Very healthy!

        February 3, 2016

You should see my waffle maker! It’s a disgrace. Your waffles look wonderful:)

    February 3, 2016
    • That was mine before this a very old Waring that was banged up badly! Thank you so much.

      February 3, 2016
      • Susan #

That’s what happens when we use things! Could be worse😋

        February 3, 2016
      • Yes agree, the old one served me well for years.

        February 4, 2016
  21. Nice waffles- and nice pix! 🙂 I just attempted to re-do waffle pix from one of my favorite recipes (on an old post…) still terrible. Yours look perfect!

    February 3, 2016
    • Waffles were hard to photograph I also have a hard time with sandwiches. Thank you so much Josette!

      February 3, 2016
  22. Oooh they look perfectly cooked! I just have a cheapo-waffle maker, but daughter seems to like it as she’s the waffle eater in the house. Congrats on your great purchase!

    February 3, 2016
    • Thank you, I had a Waring that lasted for a lot of years. This one is very nice and I’m happy with it! Thank you so much😄

      February 3, 2016
  23. Wow.. I can smell these beauties here.. They look so good.. 🙂

    February 4, 2016
  24. Those are some great looking waffles, Suzanne. For some reason Kees doesn’t lije them, so if I were to acquire a waffle maker I would be using it for myself. Like your idea of using almonds and oats in the batter.

    February 4, 2016
    • Thank you, waffles are one of my favorite things. The combination of the spelt and oat flour and almond flour was so nice together and the waffles were so tasty. Thank you again!

      February 4, 2016

I love waffles and sadly i dont own a waffle maker as yet. High time. Thank you for the review Suzanne. Your waffles are enough reason to takethe plunge now😉

    February 4, 2016
    • Thank you, yes even though waffles are not something you eat everyday IMHO it’s worth having a waffle maker for those days when you do want.

      February 4, 2016
  27. Enthusiasm ! hip hip hip hurrah for Suzanne ! 🙂

    February 4, 2016
  28. Very nice Suzanne, I’ll have to dust off my waffle maker and try this recipe. I prefer the healthier ingredients on yours. I used to make it quite often when our girls lived at home, I don’t much anymore. But I think I’ll try your recipe.

    February 4, 2016
    • The first batch I made were regular waffles from the recipe in the manual, they were very good but empty calories, I liked the healthier waffles much better not just because they are better for you but IMHO they taste much better. Thank you so much Loretta.

      February 4, 2016
  29. I’m a terrible procrastinator also Suzanne! Glad to hear you took the plunge and got a waffle maker. They look thick and delicious. I don’t own one myself but it’s always a treat to get waffles when I’m out to eat.

    February 4, 2016
    • Thanks Heather, waffles definitely are a treat not something I enjoy very often but when I do I really love eating them. The waffle maker was a good purchase, thanks again.

      February 4, 2016
  30. I have needed a new waffle iron for some time. This is going on my birthday list. Your waffles look so delicious and I love the healthiness of them. You made me hungry for second breakfast..lol 😉

    February 4, 2016
    • Thanks Antonia, this is an early birthday or late Christmas present to me, LOL! Thank you!!💕

      February 4, 2016
  31. Oh Suzanne those look so yummy!! I want a waffle maker, but I can’t get one, since I’d been 3 times larger than I am now 😛 Have you since the things they put into them now…Mac & Cheese, a scoop of cold mac & cheese then top it with more shredded cheese and then press…OMG!!! It is like you died and went to heaven!! LOL!!!
You Enjoy!!! I will live through your posts for now LOL Cheers Friend!!! 🙂

    February 4, 2016
    • I’ve seen and can’t believe it yep Mac and cheese, leftover stuffing or dressing, potatoes I am not that adventurous. I will not be using it that often or I will gain too much weight. It’s hard enough with the food blog. Thanks Amy hope you are well!!😄

      February 4, 2016
  32. Hi Suzanne, I received a waffle maker for Christmas and have not used it yet, this looks like the perfect recipe to break it in with.

    February 4, 2016
  33. OMW ! I miss waffles…my waffle maker had its day quite awhile ago, and I just never get around to replacing it…you know the usual thing, there is always something else that should perhaps take preference…Anyway your waffle maker looks awesome, and your waffles look so amazing..I need to buy a waffle maker 🙂 !!!

    February 4, 2016
    • I always say that when I break out the waffle iron, I miss having them but just don’t make them that often. They are really good. Thanks so much Lynne.

      February 5, 2016
  34. I am a procrastinator too. The waffles look delicious. I don’t suppose I will ever buy a waffle maker as I have such a small amount of kitchen storage space and it’s all full at the moment. I hope you get years of enjoyment out of your new machine. 😉

    February 4, 2016
    • I am a horrible procrastinator, I guess I just hate to spend money on something I may not use but I am determined to make the waffle maker work for the $$$ I spent on it. I do love it. Thanks so much.

      February 5, 2016
  35. I’m another one who doesn’t own a waffle maker! You’ve made me want to get one though, these look absolutely delicious. I do make pancakes but they don’t have the ‘pockets for syrup’ that waffles have, haha. It’s been ages since I ate waffles but I just loved the fact that the ice cream and syrup collects in the holes for added deliciousness. YUM. Glad that you’re happy with your new appliance purchase! xx

    February 4, 2016
    • Oh you need to get one. thanks so much Lauram yes those pockets for melted butter and syrup and the best. Thanks so much.

      February 5, 2016
  36. Love good waffles and multigrain sounds delicious and nutritious. I love the recipe books that come with the small kitchen gadgets. Sometimes they have the best recipes. I don’t have spelt but have all the other ingredients. I might give this a try this weekend with whole wheat flour.

    February 5, 2016
    • I love recipes on backs of cans and boxes, the ones in the books the gadgets come with I still use so many of them to this day because they are just so good. Thanks so much Sonal.

I’m revisiting your post here, because I’m having trouble with comments on my own blog. People comment, I reply, and the commenter receives no indication I’ve replied. I’m popping back here, because I want you to know I appreciate your visits and your comments! I’m working on my comments problems. But first I’m baking cupcakes 😉 Thanks Suzanne!

    February 5, 2016
    • Thanks Susan, I did leave a comment but had a little bit of a hard time doing it I think. Glad you got it. I really enjoy your blog.

  38. I’m in the market for a new waffle maker, and I think you just helped me make my decision 🙂 Those waffles look gorgeous!

    February 5, 2016
    • Highly recommend the Breville, it works great. I was torn between the All Clad and Breville but ultimately decided on this one and glad I did. Thanks Sarah!

      February 5, 2016
  39. You sure got a very nice waffle maker. My waffle maker is so old but is hanging in there. I can’t wait to try this recipe. I just loved spelt in bread and am sure in waffles it’s going to be delicious!

    February 5, 2016
    • Thank you so much Julie, I love my waffle maker. It’s just so easy to use and the resulats are great. My old one still worked but was not cooking the waffles well so I just took the plunge and got a new one. I also love spelt and am going to start using it more often. I love how it tastes.

      February 5, 2016
  40. These are thick and beautiful waffles. Whenever we travel, one thing I look so forward to is having Belgium waffles every morning. As you described, crisp on the outside, very tender on the inside… butter and maple syrup… I’m drooling! 🙂

    February 5, 2016
    • They are really good waffles. I love them thick and these are just right. Thanks so much Fae.

      February 5, 2016
  41. Your waffles looks very delicious and worth trying 😀
I change my recipe sometimes and use crushed walnuts, not flour and Sesame sometimes.

    February 6, 2016
    • That sounds really delicious, I love using nut flours. Thank you so much Irene.

      February 6, 2016
      • You are welcome Suzanne. I don’t use nut fluors, just a little crushed or cutted nuts here.

        February 6, 2016

      February 7, 2016
  43. Great purchase Suzanne, your waffles look amazing and I specially like the flour combination.

    February 7, 2016
    • Thank you, prior to this I had never made anything with spelt. I bought it a while ago and it has been sitting in my freezer. I don’t know why I guess I just didn’t know what to use it for. This combination was really delicious and now I plan on using it all the time. Thanks so much Viviana.

      February 7, 2016
  44. Love that last photo Suzanne! mouth-watering!! I’ve never used spelt flour– will have to give it a try. thanks.

    February 9, 2016
    • Thanks Rhonda, I am so sorry this reply is delayed. Things have been pretty crazy here. I love spelt flour, it tastes so much better (to me) than whole wheat and has less gluten. It is wonderful and the waffles are delicious,

      February 15, 2016
      • I’m marching down to the market to find some Suzanne– Larry is a whole wheat flour fan– so I think he’d like this! thanks.

        February 16, 2016
  45. I love eating waffles! But I still couldn’t justify getting them because of the lack of counter space at home… will satisfy my cravings by looking at your delicious whole grain waffles!

    February 11, 2016
    • I love being able to make waffles when I want them and they freeze so well. It’s an easy wholesome breakfast. If you saw my counters you would probably run in horror, I have so many gadgets and appliances and ingredients it’s really awful.I need a bigger kitchen.

      February 15, 2016
  46. I haven’t had waffles in so long. My favorites are the Vietnamese pandan waffles. Have you ever tried them?

    February 14, 2016
    • I am just seeing this Patty so sorry, no never tried Pandan waffles but I want to will have to look them up becaue I am certain they would be delicious, I love Vietnamese food.

      February 15, 2016
  47. The waffles are looking so good! Wish I could have some right away 🙂 I have been planning to get a waffle maker since long too and this post is just tempting me more 🙂

    February 26, 2016
    • It’s a wonderful waffle maker and I have made this recipe over and over since this post. The other day I made it with homemade almond milk. served waffles to someone who is cannot drink milk, lactose intolerant and they turned out wonderfully. Thank you so much.
