Food Bloggers Unite To Help Victims of Sandy

Food Bloggers Unite

Barb Kiebel author of the amazing blog Creative Culinary who I am sure you know of, has taken the bull by the horns and is calling all food bloggers to unite to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy.  Barb lives in Denver and I am sure has been watching the news unfold, the scenes are heart wrenching. I live in Brooklyn, NY and made it through the storm with only minimal damage in my neighborhood, we were lucky, others were not. The scenes of devastation will tear your heart out, at least they do mine. Some lost their lives, those lucky enough to make it through the storm are homeless and their precious possessions gone.

Click on the link above (creative culinary) to see how you can join in and help. Disaster relief, FEMA, Red Cross, Salvation Army and many others are on the scene working round the clock to help but the devastation is so widespread the help is just not coming fast enough.

In Manhattan there has been no power from 34th Street to lower Manhattan since Monday, the streets, subways and tunnels were flooded. The New Jersey Coast was virtually destroyed, the devastation in Staten Island is unfathomable, so far they have found 20 dead in Staten Island alone and countless residents have lost everything. Queens, the Rockaways especially was vastly affected by the storm, Breezy Point was the scene of a huge fire that destroyed over 80 homes, Brooklyn’s coastal area’s flooded, Long Island is the scene of tremendous coastal damage and widespread power outages.  It’s cold and getting colder imagine being cold and hungry with no where to go, it’s heartbreaking.

I am watching the news right now and it has gone from bad to worse, there is a possibility a Nor Easter will hit here on Wednesday, the high winds and heavy rain could be disastrous for an already fragile environment.

Please visit Barb’s blog and see how you can help!

I also cannot forget all the pets that have been affected by Sandy, they need food the ASPCA is accepting donations and desperately needs help, you can also donate to the Humane Society through their website to help rescue and feed all the animals in need.

Thank you for giving us this link. I am giving to Red Cross and am posting it on the front page sidebar of my blog. I am glad you are well. This is so heartbreaking watching and hearing everything out of NYC and other regions. So sad. Thank you again for the gentle reminder.

Exactly, Salvation Army is an excellent organization too. I have given them small donations in the past and I know the back end of what they really do for others. I can only give small amounts at a time, but every cent counts no matter what you give. People would be surprised how much many of these organizations do for others on a local basis day to day.

  6. I was just thinking about you earlier today and hoping you had come through the horrible storm intact. I’m so glad to hear you did – as I can see there were so many who weren’t so lucky. We too have been giving to the Red Cross this week, but I’ll go now and check Barb’s site. I can’t believe an nor-easter’s on the way now 😦

    • Thanks so much Suzanne. I am hoping and praying that the nor easter could hit us Wednesday, The waters have only just started to go down and I am afraid with copious amounts of rain we will flood again.

It breaks my heart what has happened to our neighbors. We live in Canada and though we had some issues here, they don’t compare to the devastation in New York and other regions. Staten Island is a really sad story. I truly hope everyone gets back to their lives as soon as possible. People were dumpster diving for food and most are without clean clothes, food or water. This should not happen in America and it truly breaks my heart. I always donate to the Red Cross and hope others do the same to the charity of their choosing! God Bless all the victims and their families.

    • Thank you so much, I am heartbroken to see what is happening here and you are so right it should not happen in America. I am working today with my block association to get together clothing, food and toiletries to take to evacuation centers. People are without everything and have lost everything,

I am heartbroken as well. I truly hope they know that not everyone forgot about them. I applaud you for all that you are doing. I hope others take the same route and do the same.

      • It’s something all of us are doing together, I am very involved in my community and we are working together to help, if everyone even makes a small donation it goes a long way. I try to put myself in their shoes I know I would be desperate for assistance of any kind. The media is all over Staten Island now which is a good thing, they are finally getting some help. Gov. Christie has been nothing short of amazing IMHO going to bat for New Jersians, Gov Cuomo has been pro-active and visiting each disaster site, and again IMHO showing great leadership. It’s monumental, the scope of it all and its going to take a long time to get back to a sense of normalcy but we are all working on it, Thank you again!

  10. Thank you so much…for not just helping to get the word out but for your kind comments. My heart is breaking; helping others helps me, it’s that simple. I’ve seen a lot of people already link to the American Red Cross site from mine…lots of small donations add up to a lot; that’s what we are hoping for! Wish I could do more. You take good care….Barb

    • I am so happy to do any little bit I can to help get the word out and so so pleased that donations are coming in. The affected area’s need help, a lot of it right away. I am working right now gathering warm clothing for children and infants to take to an evacuation center, they need so much how can we not help. There but for the grace of God…..
