Pumpkin Molasses Dog Cookies
Counting down the weeks before Christmas and this year I am making lots of gift boxes, for charity auction winners, family, friends and clients. I go through a huge amount of ingredients, flour, butter, sugar, dried fruit, chocolate etc… I don’t really care to calculate how much goes into this because I’m afraid I would scare myself.
When making gift boxes or baskets I will always include dog treats if the recipient is a pet parent. I posted a recipe for dog biscuits with peanut butter and fruit, but for the holidays I wanted to do something with more holiday flavors and pumpkin, molasses and a dash of warm spice just screams holidays, at least to me. Why shouldn’t our fur babies have something a little different, special and holidayish. After doing a little research I determined that molasses in small amounts is not bad for our canine companions and we all know that pumpkin is very very good for them, I didn’t go grain free for these cookies, but used whole wheat pastry flour which given as a treat and not in large amounts is fine. I found a recipe online for pumpkin molasses dog treats and proceeded to put my own spin on it.
Pumpkin Molasses Dog Cookies
1 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup coconut oil
6 tbs water (more if needed a tbs at a time)
1 large egg
5 cups whole wheat flour or comination of whole grain flours
1/2 tsp baking soda (optional)
4 tsp dried milk
1/4 tsp powdered ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Optional- sprinkle a little coconut palm sugar mixed with cinnamon and ginger on top before baking.
Heat oven to 350 degree’s. In small bowl mix together the wet ingredients, pumpkin, molasses, egg, oil and water. In large mixing bowl whisk together the flour, dry, baking soda and spices. Add the wet ingredients and combine until it is a cohesive dough, if you need to add more water do so in small amounts 1 tbs at a time until you reach the desired consistency.
Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired shapes. Bake for approximately 15-20 minutes until lightly browned. Let cool on rack.
Percy ate it but liked the bite of ginger molasses cookies for humans better

Thanks Teagan, Percy is not the best one to test my dog cookies, he is so picky, he ate it but he didn’t devour it. LOL, he doesn’t think he is a dog and can’t understand why he can’t eat what I make for humans.
Fantastic! Percy looks happy even if she’d prefer a human treat. Don’t they all! My dog is on a special diet for her Cushing’s Disease, so I’d have to check with her vet. They look good enough for me, though! LOL
I think with Cushings like diabetes you have to give no sugar and low to no grains. I lived with a special diet for Izzy and Nando for years for diabetes. Thanks Mary, for treats I made them ground turkey with vegetables baked and cut into bite size pieces. No grains and no sugar, these only have molasses but that’s still sweet and was contraband 😀
True about the sugar and low to no grains. She’s on special dog food for that reason. I think I remember your treats made with ground turkey.

Well I think it’s partially my fault for spoiling him but I thought pugs are supposed to be greedy eaters willing to eat anything anytime, Percy is more like Izzy who was very picky. P has a discriminating palate for sure❤️❤️💕💕😘😘🎄🎅🏻

Hey Rhonda, have been busy baking sending off gift boxes and attempting to decorate for the holidays. This Saturday is our block association holiday party and I have had to coordinate, getting invites out, its potluck so keeping track of what everyone is bringing, etc.,,, I have 2 auction items to send out and have to make 6 more gift baskets for clients and friends. Hey Suzanne– I can picture you, bringing all that together. Do you keep lists and lists?? I have a big one here I’m working on. We have Christmas events 6 nights in a row (3 at our house)– tonight about 30 young girls are coming for an ornament exchange– should be noisy fun. These bones sound good enough to eat as a human snack. Maci prefers anything that goes into my mouth versus what’s in her bowl too. I always love getting homemade gifts and I’m sure there are some very lucky people on your list!

Oh this is a perfect recipe! I am doing cookie favours for a wedding coming up and we want to do a personalised human cookie and and matching dog cookie for the pet owners…this could be perfect! Do you think the dough is firm enough to be stamped with letter stamps? (like a sugar cookie?’

Btw, these adorable pumpkin – molasses cookies are such a wonderful treat! I used to be under the impression that dogs werent allowed molasses but I was misinformed – am gonna have to try these out when it gets closer to Christmas – one of mine just had some dental work done – and I must say, how come dog dental work is way cheaper than ours eh?! 🙂

Thanks so much Shashi, before I put the molasses in I did a bit of research and it seemed that there was no negatives to using it. Didn’t use a lot anyway and the pumpkin is so good for our fur kids. I know about the dental work, I should bring Percy to Georgia, it’s expensive here but then everything is expensive in NYC. I also loved meeting you as well.

I actually wanted to use spelt but ran out and had to use whole wheat which I don’t like as much, as a matter of fact I ran out of the different flours I like to use, barley, spelt and oat.
