Sri Lankan Curry Chicken Kebabs for Fiesta Friday #21
Almost a year ago I had a pot luck here at my house for a group of great cooks that I know from Food 52 and some from blogs I follow. One of the incredible cooks is Queen Sashy her blog is Three Little Halves, if you haven’t seen it you should take a look it’s incredible, the recipes, the photography the writing, no wonder it has been nominated and given awards, Just beautiful!! So she brought me a bottle of her own homemade spice blend, Sri Lankan Roasted Curry powder. It’s is fragrant and incredibly delicious. I put it in my spice cabinet and forgot about it, until today. I wanted to bring something to the party that is easy to eat, not messy, yet very tasty. so kebab is a great choice. I marinated chunks of chicken in greek yogurt, salt, pepper, the curry, garlic, ginger, lime juice and lime zest.
Back to the party, every Friday we all get together for a fabulous food fest the AHMAZING Angie @The Novice Gardener as always is our fearless and fierce leader. This weeks festivities are co hosted by Elaine@foodbod and Julianna@foodie on board. Both a lot of fun, accomplished cooks and I for one am very excited that they are hosting this week. If you want to join Fiesta Fridays don’t hesitate, do it, just click on the link in this paragraph for Angie the Novice Gardener.
Sri Lankan Curry Chicken Kebabs
1 1/2 lb chicken cut into bite size pieces
1 cup greek yogurt unflavored
juice of 1 lime
zest of 1/2 lime
2 heaping tsp Sri Lankan roasted curry powder or your favorite curry
1 clove garlic minced
1 tsp fresh ginger grated
salt and pepper to taste
Combine everything but the chicken in a bowl, add the chicken and toss to make sure each piece is coated. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.
When ready to cook, skewer pieces of chicken scraping most of the yogurt marinade off, you can grill on the stovetop or outside on your grill. I found it took approximately 10 minutes for them to cook through I turned to make sure all sides were evenly browned. Sprinkle with sumac before serving if you like and have on hand, also a squeeze of fresh lime is delicious.
You can eat this with rice, on it’s own with salad or on flat bread with yogurt and mint.
Those are bound to be incredibly succulent and tasty! Love meat cooked in yoghurt. As for the spices, do you happen to know the ratios of the ingredients for the curry powder? I’ll Google in the meantime. Really don’t know much about Sri Lankan cuisine. Even though a friend was from there. Tuh, I guess her family had too many staff to bother cooking!
They are wonderful, me too, love yogurt marinade. I will ask her what the ratio’s are of the spices. You can see what is in it from my photo and she is a scientist so I imagine she put the spices in descending order.I know next to nothing about Sri Lankan cuisine but it intrigues me. Thanks Johnny.
Suzanne, it’s so kind of you to mention my spice mixing and the blog in your post. I would be happy to email you the mixture so that you can pass it to Johnny. And for the folks who are not keen on mixing spices themselves, Sri Lankan roasted curry powder is also available in Sri Lankan stores in Staten Island and online on lankandelight.com
Oh yes please send the ratio of spices in your blend. Would love that. The blend is wonderful, so well balanced and delicious. I love it! Thank you so much.
I love yoghurt marinade and these kebabs look terrific Suzanne! You are so lucky about the curry and knowing Queen Sashy, what a great treat!
Thanks Viviana, yes love yogurt marinade my favorite is lamb. Sashy is amazing. So talented, I love her blog.
I have just come in from a long late evening walk and these look so very tempting: I would love to eat one of them. Right now!
Thank you so much, I wish I lived close to give you one.
Would love to taste this! Sounds delicious!
Super simple Lori, use any curry powder. They are great on the grill!
Succulent Kebabs wrapped in flat bread with yogurt. Can’t be better than this. What makes Sri Lankan different from the Indian, I wonder…???
I wish I knew the difference. It does taste different to me than some of the Indian curry powders I have had. Not sure if it’s because it’s Sri Lankan or just that Sashy is so adept at blending her spices. Thanks so much Fae!
Kebabs are always good and your kebab looks very tasty 🙂
Thanks so much I love Kebabs!
These look fantastic, Suzanne, and the Sri Lankan curry has got me interested! These chicken kebabs look like a delicious pairing for that flatbread.
The kebab are really nice with the flat bread. Some greens, or cucumber, lemon, yogurt with mint. Pretty yummy, thanks so much.
I remember your post from that potluck! Am so glad to be following you still a year later. So many good eats your way 🙂 These look delish and I imagine they’d be followed nicely by your chai honey (slightly) pecan-deficient ice cream 😉
Oh yes wish I had some left, that ice cream was gone in a flash. Thanks so much Liz! It’s been a while I think.
Hi Suzanne, I love that pot of spice mix and I’m very jealous of your get together! How wonderful 🙂 the kebabs look great, they’d be a big hit in my house with my boys! Enjoy the party, great to see you xxx
Thanks so much Elaine, it’s a really wonderful spice mix. So good on the chicken. Thanks for hosting this week, it’s going to be a great party!
A pleasure, always xx
Queen Sashy came to your potluck? Wow!! And you’ve made chicken kebabs with her spice mix, double wow. Three Little Halves is a beautiful blog, how does she compose those photos? Just reading the spice blend on the label makes me want to grab the mortar and pestle and make my own blend. Sri Lanka is on the list of countries I really, really want to visit, if only for the food.
Gorgeous dish for Fiesta Friday! 🙂
Yes she did, she lives in Manhattan, honestly she is a true artist, she is a Scientist and you can see how meticulous she is in her photo’s and her dishes. She is as nice as can be and truly amazing. The spice blend is perfectly balanced not too much of any spice. It’s brilliant. Thanks so much.

That curry powder sounds sooo good Suzanne! I’d wasn’t to put it on everything! I make a zucchini curry flavored spread that this would taste fabulous in. I love all the ingredient flavors you used.
Thanks Brandi, it really is a great blend of spices, perfectly balanced Delicious sounding in the zucchini curry!
Hmm, a different take on chicken kebabs. I love the curry. Lovely recipe, Suzanne. 🙂
I love curry, all different kinds and thought it would be a nice flavor for the chicken. Thanks so much Jhuls!!
What a nice and versatile gift! And, your kebabs look delicious. Hope you get some time to enjoy the first day of summer today! 🙂
Thats right Kaila I totally forgot today is the first day of summer. Happy summer to you and thank you so much.
I love yogurt marinade, it makes meat so tender and juicy! These chicken kebabs looks really good!!!
I do too, love a yogurt marinade. Thanks so much the yogurt with the spices and aromatics was great. Thank you so much.
My sister-in-law frequently marinates chicken in yogurt and it is always so lovely. She swears that even if you overcook it, the meat just won’t dry out. I also love playing with spice mixes, whether gifted or created by myself. Last week’s dinner of CSA veggies was a blend of crumbled sausage, snap peas, carrots and scallions with preserved black lemon spice, turmeric and soy sauce. Not really sure how it worked, but it did. This recipe is beautiful and looks delicious, Suzanne. And kabobs is exactly what you need on a warm summer night.
Oh I hope you post that vegetable and sausage recipe it really sounds great to me. Thanks so much Melissa, missed seeing you around the blogosphere!
Anything marinated in yogurt comes out so, so tender! These look wonderful!

Yogurt just cuts into the meat and makes it succulent and tender. This looks awesome.
Thank you, yes it certainly does. Yogurt adds a tangy flavor, tenderizes and gives it a distinct flavor.

Gonna make it again and again.
